Plot of the The Summer Train:
Sandra, the main character in Susan’s novel suffers from Bipolar illness. We follow her journey from a New York Psychiatric hospital to her seemingly normal life in an upscale Hamptons community.

“The Summer Train” is fiction but the struggle with Bipolar illness is real, and we gain insight into Sandra’s symptoms and struggle with a mental illness that impacts all facets of her life and all who suffer.

Bipolar illness has no cure, but it can be managed. Susan will discuss the stigma, shame, how she coped, always hiding her sickness from the world until she couldn’t anymore. “We have come a long way from the early days of mental illness and when Bipolar disorder was named manic-depression.”

We have new therapies, medications, and hopefully new attitudes. The media is saturated with Bipolar. Susan calls it the disease du jour. But isn’t that good? People are paying attention. Brain science is at its infancy. We are at a turning point in mental health. With the right psychiatrist and proper medication we can all face the challenges. Bipolar disorder has come out of hiding and offers hope.

Susan will also discuss how for some people, especially women, flirting can be a coping strategy and sexual relationships become a way to mask the illness.

Join our lively discussion! Don’t miss this call which is assured to hit some good spots in your life. It may help you come to terms with your own issues in ways that improve the rest of your life. It is not too late to be honest with the people you love.
